Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. — Psalms 51:1
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
On this Ash Wednesday, we begin the sacred journey of Lent together. As ashes mark our foreheads (some literally and some figuratively), we are reminded of our human frailty and God ’ s enduring mercy. We remember that we are dust, yet deeply loved—held by the grace of God and invited into new life through Jesus Christ.
Lent is a gentle season, calling us to slow down and listen more closely for God ’ s voice. It is a time to return to the heart of our faith through prayer, reflection, and simple acts of faithfulness. As American Baptists we walk this path not alone, but together—supporting one another, learning together, and growing in love.
At the center of our discipleship is Christ ’ s love—a love that heals wounded hearts, restores broken relationships, and brings hope where it is most needed. As American Baptists, we share this love when we care for our neighbors, accompany those who are suffering, and seek wholeness in our churches and communities. God calls us to be a healing presence, shaped by compassion and grounded in hope.
As we journey through these forty days, may God meet us in the quiet places of repentance and renewal, and send us forth with hearts made tender by grace. May our lives bear witness to Christ ’ s love, and may our churches be signs of healing and hope in the world.
May this Lenten season draw you closer to God and to one another, preparing us for the joy of resurrection.
With prayerful gratitude and hope,
Rev. Dr. Gina C. Jacobs-Strain General Secretary American Baptist Churches USA
